Thoothukudi custodial deaths: Police Inspector placed under suspension

Thoothukudi, Jun 28 (UNI) The Inspector of Police, Sridhar who had been relieved of duty from Sathankulam Police Station in this district in connection with the custodial deaths of two traders, P. Jayaraj (60) and his son J. Benicks (31) has been placed under suspension on Sunday.

Deputy Inspector General of Police, Tirunelveli range Praveen Kumar Abinapu ordered the suspension of Sridhar, police sources said.

The Inspector was on duty when the father-son duo were allegedly tortured by the police personnel in Sathankulam police station, leading to their deaths.

Sridhar was put on waitlist soon after the deaths and then transferred to Armed Reserve Wing.

Earlier, the two Sub-Inspectors of the Sathankulam police station, namely Balakrishnan and Raghuganesan had been suspended, while a departmental inquiry had been initiated against head constables Muthuraj and Murugan in this connection.

Meanwhile, the Vadasery Police Inspector Bernard Xavier was transferred and posted at Sathankulam police station.

Jayaraj and Benicks were arrested on June 19 for keeping their mobile shop open despite lockdown restrictions. Both of them were brutally assaulted in Sathankulam police station and lodged in Kovilpatti sub-jail, the next day.

Both of them were admitted to the Kovilpatti government hospital on June 22 after their health condition worsened in the sub-jail. While Benicks died on the same night, his father breathed his last on June 23.
